2008-2009 School Year Weekly Letters to GREEN Door Parents

From Ms. Cindy, Ms. Margarita, & Miss Sandra

November 21, 2008

Language is typically thought of as spoken or written words.  Language is communication in many forms.  For young toddlers, language can include gestures (waving goodbye), facial expressions (smiling) and body language (turning their head away from a loud sound).  Around the first year of your child’s life, they will begin to use the first words that stand for something for ex: “Mama” or “Dada”.  Young toddlers will use more single words that are important to them.  Both infants and toddlers need an environment filled with lots of language so that they can practice communicating in this critical stage of language development.

This week the topic was the color “Blue”.  The following activities were done:

Monday – The children played with blue playdough.

Tuesday – The children made blue thumbprints.

Wednesday – The children made blue handprints.

Thursday – The children made torn paper are with blue paper.

Friday – The children did sponge painting with blue paint.

A NOTE FROM MRS. DAVIS:

*      Thank you to all the families who have sent in Publix Gift Cards to share with families in need this Thanksgiving season.  Those who donated, your child moved their heart onto the graph of giving for sharing their heart with someone else.  We will still be collecting gift cards in any amount until November 26th.  Remember, lots of little donations make a wonderful Thanksgiving Feast!

*      Thank you, thank you, thank you to Holly’s dad, Inaki’s Mom, Angeline’s Dad (from blue door) and Adelise’s Siblings Ramón, Leesia & Britney  (Yellow Door) for helping spread the mulch on the playground.

*      A word of thanks for everyone who has turned in their already read magazines to recycle for others to read.  If you would like to borrow one, they are on the last set of bookshelves outside of Blue Door.  When you finish, just bring it back.

*      Please plan accordingly…we will be closed on Thursday, November 27 and Friday, November 28th in observance of Thanksgiving.  Weekly parents are asked to please pay on Monday.

*      If you plan to shop on line on “Black Friday” instead of standing in line at the store, please go through our portal to do your holiday shopping.

o       http://www.kidsforkidsacademy.com/shop%20to%20earn.htm

*      Do you like to bake or to have great baked goods in your house around the holiday time?  If so, sign up to be part of the Great Cookie Exchange.  Here is how it works:

o       Sign up and bake 4 dozen cookies using your favorite recipe.

o       Put 2 cookies in each zip lock bag with a label or insert in the bag with the recipe.

§         If you need our help, email us the recipe and we will print out 24 little inserts for you to put in the bags.

o       Bring in the 24 bags on December 17th.

o       We will but your bags on the assembly line and in return, you will get 24 different bags with other cookies and their recipes.

o       Enjoy a wonderful variety of cookies in your home this holiday season.

November 14, 2008

How many times have you looked for your toddlers shoes? This week the topic was shoes.  Your child was able to take off their shoes and put them back on again as many times as they liked.  During this repeated process, toddlers will be learning how to remove shoes, and how to get them back on.  As they play with these props, they will be developing coordination and self help skills.

The following activities were done this week with the help of your child:

Monday: Children helped the teacher trace their feet.

Tuesday: No School – Veterans Day

Wednesday: Children dipped in their feet in paint and then on paper.

Thursday: Tennis shoes rubbings

Friday:  Free art day, coloring with crayons

A NOTE FROM MRS. DAVIS:

What a wonderful week we had!  Not only did our teachers enjoy getting a ton of new things for their class from the NAEYC conference, but I was happy to be back enjoying our students.  I especially had a great time at our Family Reading Night.  For those of you, who missed it, please consider joining us next month on December 4th

We have a lot of things coming up in November.  We will be introducing our students to the Graph Of Giving as we teach them to share their hearts with someone else.  In November, we usually collect food and grocery gift cards for needy families outside of our school, but this year we have 6 families we have recently lost their jobs and are falling on hard economic times.  If you are able, we are collecting $5 Publix Gift Cards to help those families from our own school to have a Happy Thanksgiving.  Any child who brings in a $5 Publix Gift Card will move their heart onto the Graph of Giving on the Pantry Door.

For those of you who ordered cookie dough, it will be arriving on Wednesday, November 19th.  Please plan to pick it up that day and either deliver it to the individuals you sold it to or have a place in your refrigerator or freezer until you can deliver it.  It is ok to refreeze or refrigerate, but we do not have space at the school to store it overnight.   In all, we raised $1400 on the sale, $850 will be used on a truck full of playground mulch and the rest will be used to enhance our multicultural toys and books in the classrooms.  If you are able to help in spreading the mulch, we are looking for help around noon Saturday.  Rakes, wheel barrels, and shovels are welcome!  If we have a lot of volunteers, it should take about an hour.

We will be holding a Family Turkey Decorating Event.  Please check your child’s mailbox for an outline of a turkey.  Use your creativity to decorate it any way you wish.  Some ideas include using beans, rice, feathers, buttons, or anything found around your house. Please return it before Monday, November 25th so that we can hang them for all to see.  Be sure to write your child’s name and class on the back.

Finally, we will be holding Thanksgiving Feasts in all our rooms.  Please check your child’s class door to sign up to bring an item for the feast.  VPK sign up sheets will be on the pantry doors by the kitchen.  Families are invited to join us for this special day so mark your calendars.  Remember, we will be closed on Thursday, November 27 and Friday, November 28th in Observance of Thanksgiving.

November 7, 2008

Young toddlers love to play with balls of all sizes and shapes.  They like to throw, kick, roll, pick up and carry balls.  By 18 months, some toddlers may be able to throw a ball forward.  They usually learn how to catch a ball, sometimes after they have learned to throw a ball.  Playing with balls will help young toddlers with their hand-eye coordination, balance and gross motor skills.

This week’s topic was “Balls” and the following activities were done.

Monday – Rolled a ball in and out of a bin

Tuesday – Made balls out of playdoh

Wednesday – Rolled a ball across the table

Thursday – Tape balls

Friday – Rolled ball back and forth

A NOTE FROM MRS. DAVIS

I am writing you from Dallas where I am attending the NAEYC conference.  I want to take a moment to thank my wonderful staff who has worked so hard in my absence to make sure things ran smoothly, especially Miss Jeanne who stood in for me, Miss Delly, and even cooked in the kitchen for Miss Maria.  I have learned so much at the conference that I can’t wait to share with the parents and staff.  I am always looking to improve my skills as an administrator since my primary training is as a teacher.  I had a chance to look at some great new innovative things for the classroom and made some purchases that I know the teachers and students will really enjoy.  One of the things I learned was how to put up a Staff Compliment Tree.  In the weeks to come you will see it going up.  I am asking parents to think of a compliment you can give to the teachers and assistants in your child’s class and turn it in to me on a post it note.  Each week, I will add the compliments to the tree.  It can be general or specific (I really appreciate it when I pick up my child and Miss X always hugs them as they leave the class.  Or I loved the monkey activity that was done in Miss X’s class this week.  My child really learned a lot.)  You can also mention a quality that makes the teacher special.  You will be surprised how special just a few words can make someone feel and it only takes a moment out of your day.  Also feel free to submit compliments for our office and kitchen staff.  If you do not have any post it notes, just cut out a 3 inch square of paper and use that.  I can’t wait to get back and see everyone on Monday.

October 31, 2008

Young toddlers want to know and learn.  Play is an essential component of quality early childhood programs.  During play, children learn and enjoy active participation. In playful activity young toddlers find pleasure in repeating an action.  Play influences their development in all areas: cognitive, language, social, emotional and motor.  This week the topic was Halloween pumpkins.  The following activities were done:

Monday- The children hand painted with orange paint.

Tuesday- Children using a paintbrush painted mini pumpkins.

Wednesday- Rolled and played with orange playdough.

Thursday- Teacher discussed the pumpkin shape, color and size.

Friday- Using their thumbs the children made orange thumb prints.  They also went on a Halloween parade and painted mini pumpkins.

 A NOTE FROM MRS. DAVIS

It was so incredible to have more than 40 parents volunteering at our Halloween Happening.  Thank you so much to those who came and helped at the event, but also to everyone who donated candy for the bags for the homeless (we made 150 bags), non candy treats for the Halloween parade, and mini pumpkins.  We hope you liked the Pumpkin Bats!  Also a special thanks to all the parents who took home pumpkins to put holes in and those who cut out bat body parts out of felt.  With Halloween behind us, we look forward to Thanksgiving and helping families who are not as fortunate as we are.  More details to follow!  In a few days, we should have the Halloween photos on our website.  If you took photos and bring them in on a disk, we can upload them as well.  For those of you getting a head start on holiday shopping, please remember if you plan to shop on-line, if you go to your shopping destinations through our website, our school can benefit from your shopping.  K-Mart on-line is even doing lay away!  To shop, click on the link below and then go to your favorite merchants.  www.shoptoearn.net/kidsforkidsacademy

October 24, 2008

Fine motor development includes use of the hands and fingers to complete activities.  Young toddlers learn how to grasp an object first in the palm of their hands.  Then, they grasp with their fingers. All toddlers develop at their own rate.  The topic this week was colors.  The following activities were done:

Monday:                    Children rolled and flattened green play-doh.

Tuesday:                     Children played with white whip cream.

Wednesday:             Children played with color pillar.

Thursday:                    Made a rainbow from the children’s handprints.

Friday:                        Color walk.

Although our class will not be formally participating in the Halloween Happening, we will be doing some of the activities in the privacy of our own class.  This is because the babies have difficulty traveling from class to class to participate and they really don’t enjoy wearing the costume, it is upsetting for some.  On Halloween, our students will participate in the following activities:  pumpkin Bat painting, Halloween parade, & watch the Dora Halloween Video.  If you would like to send in Halloween treats for the Halloween parade, any NON candy item will be accepted (cookies, fruit snacks, goldfish).  We are also looking for 2 parents to donate 3 baby pumpkins for our pumpkin painting activity.

A NOTE FROM MRS. DAVIS

We are so excited that now 90% of our parents are getting their communications through e-mail.  What a great way to save paper!  Please continue to check your child’s mailbox to get their free books and work for the week.   I also wanted to mention that we have had several parents who have lost their jobs in these hard economic times.  If you have a company that is hiring, please let us know so that we can try and help out those who need jobs.   Next Friday is our annual Halloween Happening!  It is a really fun day not only for our students, but for anyone who wants to come and help out at the school.  All kids expect green door are invited to come dressed up in costume.

October 17, 2008

The teachers of Green Door are happy that your child is a member of our family here at Kids for Kids Academy.  It has been often said that, “Parents are a child’s first teacher”.  This is a belief we all share.  You are the most important people in the life of your young child.  Your child’s teachers share your desire to have the best program for your child.  We have collected pictures, as you know of your child’s family.  When your child is feeling a little down or just misses “Mommy or Daddy”, we have our family book here to share with your child as well as their friends.  This week the topic was “Family and Friends”.  The following activities were done:

Monday – We discussed the family book.

Tuesday – The teacher demonstrated sharing and caring with kids.

Wednesday – The children hand-painted a friendship banner.

Thursday – We went to Red Door to see our friends and shared music class with them.

Friday – Rolled and patted play doh.

A NOTE FROM MRS. DAVIS

What an exciting week we had together.  I think the highlight of the week was our Family Reading Night.  We had 33 families in attendance and everyone had a great time.  Next time I will have to make more cookies!  Here is a picture of everyone together.  If you missed this one, the next one will be on November 12th.  Come early to get a good seat.  This weekend is our garage sale.  Please come by and shop or if you have donations, feel free to drop them off on Saturday morning.  Our next big event is our Halloween Happening.  If you would like to sign up to volunteer, it will be a fun morning.  It will start at 9 am and go until 11:30 in all classes except green.  We will be accepting donations of candy (for the homeless kids), mini pumpkins, and non-candy treat like fruit snacks, cookies, and small trinkets to pass out at our Halloween Parade.

October 10, 2008

This week as you may have noticed in our classroom, we have a new circus tent with a comfy Pooh couch.  Young toddlers sometimes need a little time and a quiet place where they can go and calm down.  Our quiet area gives our toddlers somewhere to go when they feel overwhelmed or upset, or they just want to relax.  Toddlers are unsure of how to handle their emotions in appropriate ways; they watch those around them to learn.

This week the topic was “Red”.  Our children had the opportunity to experience new materials such as sponges and finger paint.  The following activities were done:

Monday – Dipped sponges into red paint.

Tuesday – Torn paper art

Wednesday – Red lego prints

Thursday – Red hand prints

Friday – Flattened and rolled red playdoh

October 3, 2008

This week, the topic was “Gardening”.  During the week, your child played with the water table as well as the sand table.  This gives our toddlers experiences with texture.  The different feel will encourage infants to use their hands to grasp and manipulate.

These activities will allow our children to develop the sense of touch, which they will use throughout their lives.  The following activities were done:

 Monday:  Ladybug prints

Tuesday:  Played with playdoh

Wednesday:  Used the sandbox – the children enjoyed as well as felt wet dirt from the playground.

Thursday:  Children glued real grass to paper.

Friday:  Made bees with fingertips

A NOTE FROM MRS. DAVIS:

We are about to begin doing the Ages and Stages Assessments with our students.  This is a screening tool that can help tell you how your child is developing.  Please see your child’s teacher to set up a 10 minute appointment to go over the assessment.  This assessment is done as a cooperative interview with the teacher.  Once the results are available, we will get them to you.  If you cannot arrange for a face to face conference, please call and arrange a phone conference.  It takes about 10 minutes to complete.

We are still collecting donations for The Harbin Family who lost their home and their 4 year old son in a house fire.  Any donations are greatly appreciated.  To make matters worse, the hotel they are staying in was robbed.  The child’s funeral is on Sunday and they are still short $2500 to pay for it.  Please Help!  Cash of checks can be left at the front desk.  So far our school has raised $600.

This week, your toddler enjoyed going on short walks and collecting nature items.  This week we took a small bag with us on our nature walk so we could bring “treasures” back to our classroom and share with our family at home.  Students found many interesting items that adults don’t always notice.  Take time to examine these fascinating items with your child and talk about what they found.  We believe that an appreciation of beauty and nature begins during the early years.  We are working to start that important process with our young toddlers.

The following topic was done this week, “Fall”.   These activities were done:

Monday – We crumbled up real leaves

Tuesday – Went on a nature walk                                Thursday – Leaf people

Wednesday – Leaf painting                                           Friday – Leaf blow

announcements to my email.                                                        as well as other announcements.

I am sending you this information because part of the goal of our school is to create caring citizens.  Here is a chance for you and your family to make a huge difference in the life of another family.  It is with a very heavy heart that I share this sad information with you.  Although the child mentioned below IS NOT from our school, the family certainly is in need of our help.  I have included the small mention from the Wednesday Miami Herald.

On Monday, Shamese Harbon picked up her Pre-K (4 year old) child and left him home with his grandmother and 12 month old baby brother for a nap.  She went to pick up her 4th grade daughter from school and returned to find that her house had burned down.  Her mother and infant child were safe, but the 4 year old perished in the fire.  The family is left to deal with not only the loss of a child, but the loss of their home and all their belongings.  The Red Cross is providing a hotel for two days.  Kids For Kids Academy will be taking up a collection for the family which includes a boy and girl, both in elementary school, the mother, father, aunt, and grandmother who all lived in the home.  Mr. Davis and I will start the collection with $100.  We will collect for two weeks, please remember no donation is too small, a lot of small contributions will make a big difference.  If you are able, please send in either cash, checks made out to cash, or Publix, Walmart, or Target Gift cards to assist the family in starting over.  Let’s take this opportunity to count our blessings for all we have!

September 19, 2008

The topic this week was Community Helpers.  Art is very important when we think of the total development of the child.  Through the year your child will experiment with media such as paint, paper and play-dough.  Of course all of these items are non-toxicant safe for your child to use as well as taste.  Although these art materials are safe, they do not taste so great, so one try is usually all that’s needed!

        The following activities done:

Monday:  The children colored the word community helpers.  The focus here was to help our child grasp the crayon as well as moving it back and forth.

Tuesday:  They made a police car art

Wednesday:  They had fingerprint art

Thursday:  The children painted with red paint

Friday:  They children played with play-dough

 A NOTE FROM MRS. DAVIS:

We would like to welcome back all our old families and sent a special welcome to our new ones.  We had a great turn out for the Family Fun Day.  If you were there, we took pictures that are on our website and you can take one copy off the pantry doors.  When you stop by your child’s class, please pick up the “My Family Page” and take it home.  Please return it to school as soon as possible filled with family photos.  We will be making a booklet to be kept in the Quiet Area for when students need time to reflect.  Sometimes having family photos is comforting to them.  If you have not gotten your copy of the school calendar, please see someone at the front desk.  The calendar has the food menus for the year as well as events that will take place at the school.  You will see on the calendar that the Oral Health Fee will be billed on August 25th and must be paid by September 25th to avoid late fees.  This fee, about $0.09 per day is to cover the cost of the disposable toothbrushes we use after lunch.    Also please mark your calendars now for our Open House on September 11th.  The mandatory parent meeting will take place at 7 pm followed by classroom visitations.  This is the only event we have all year that is not very “Kids Friendly”.  If it is possible to leave one parent at home with your child, it would be a better experience for everyone.

It was a real joy to see all the little bunny children as they hunted for eggs on the playground.  A special thanks to all the parents who followed our egg filling guidelines by not putting candy in the eggs.  It really helps to reinforce our oral health program.   Although we did out best to check all of the eggs, if we missed some and candy got home with your child, we apologize.  Please keep in mind that anything that goes home in the form of goodie bags either for special events or birthdays, must be approved by an administrator in the main office.  Please also remember that because of our participation in the Childcare Food Program, we are not permitted to serve sweet items like cookies or cupcakes during the lunch hour.  Therefore, cupcakes can only be served with the afternoon snack.  If your child only attends for half of the day and is not in school for snack, we celebrate their special occasions during lunch with items like sugar free popsicles.

It is hard to believe that the month of March is already here, February flew by!  We are still waiting for a validator from NAEYC to visit our school for our accreditation.  We are sure they will be here one day next week.  Attached is an envelope with a parent survey.  Please fill it out and return it to the front desk.  Everyone who completes the survey by March 10th will be entered for a chance to win a $50 tuition credit.  These surveys will be used as part of the accreditation process.

I hope you will all join us for our informational PARENT NIGHT on Wednesday, March 5th at 6:00 pm to find out more information about our upcoming Family Safety Class.  Finally, please remember to label all clothing sent in with your child, especially jackets.

 A NOTE FROM MRS. DAVIS

We have had a lot of excitement this week.  As you know we are waiting for a visit from NAEYC (National Association For Young Children) for the last step in our pursuit of our accreditation.  They will be here in the next two weeks.  Ironically, we also got a call from APPLE (A Florida accrediting agency) that we are in a 45 window for their visit as well.  I know when they come, they will see how wonderful our teachers are and how special our program is.  In the next week, you will be getting a parent survey which is required for APPLE.  Any families who turn it in within one week will be put in a drawing for a $50 tuition credit.

Some other exciting news…Please check your mailbox for a flyer regarding our upcoming parenting classes.  The class is a family safety program put on by FIU and sponsored by The Children’s Trust.  Classes will be twice a week for 5 weeks starting March 5th and going through April 23rd.  The classes will be from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.  See the flyer for more information.  Click here for a copy of the flyer.

Additionally, one of our kind parents, Dr. Lourdes Nunez, has donated a Medical Microdermabrasion Treatment valued at $150 to our school.  We will be selling raffle tickets for $5 and will draw the lucky winner on March 21st.  All of the money raised will go the Kids For Kids Academy Scholarship Fund which assists parents who have had financial crisis like foreclosures or loss of work.  Please offer the opportunity to friends and family member to buy a raffle ticket to help this program.  To learn more about her many services, you can visit her website at www.miamimedicalesthetics.com.

Finally, a special thanks to our friends at the Country Walk Veterinary Clinic.  The Vet there donated her services to give complete medical check-ups to all our rabbits and ferrets.  I am glad to say, they are all very healthy.  If you have animals, please give them your business.  I use them for my own cats and everyone there is very friendly and knowledgeable.

A NOTE FROM MRS. DAVIS

Our school is going through a very exciting period.  We have spent much of the year working on the renewal of our National Association For The Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Accreditation.   We have just been notified that we have completed stage 3 and are eligible for the visit for an evaluator from Washington.  This is a huge honor as only 5 % of all schools in the Country hold this distinction.  We will be told 24 hours in advance of the visit when it will take place.  Needless to say we are very excited and hopeful that we will be successful.

One reminder about our food service; because of our standing with the Department of Health, we cannot allow outside food to be brought into our school unless there is a dietary restriction or food allergy.  Also, breakfast can only be served from 7:00 a.m. – 8:15 a.m.  Students must be finished eating by 8:30 a.m.  Please note that food cannot be served after 8:15 a.m.  If your child cannot arrive prior to 8:15 a.m., they must be fed at home.

A NOTE FROM MRS. DAVIS:

Additionally, if you have not seen the class portraits, they are posted on the front door.  We will be taking orders for a week and they will come a few days later.  We are only ordering photos for families who PRE ORDER THEM.  If you want one, let someone at the front desk know.  We will bill your account $15 when they arrive.

Finally, we will be having a Parent Teacher Advisory (PTA) meeting on Monday from 8:30-9:00 a.m.  We are looking for your input on how to make our school better and will be sharing some new ideas that we would like to put into place.  If you would like to attend, please send an e-mail to bethdavis@kidsforkidsacademy.com.

Our school will be helping three families in our community to have a brighter holiday season.  One of the families is consists of a wonderfully generous grandmother who has opened her home and heart to her 8 grandchildren ranging in age from 5-14.  Their parents, her own children are both serving our country in Iraq.  If you would like to help, please choose a heart with a Thanksgiving food item from the pantry doors and bring in that item on or before Tuesday, November 20th.  We will put all items in boxes that we will decorate for the families.  When your child brings in the item, they will have an opportunity to put a heart with their name on our school “Graph of Giving”.  With your help, we can make Thanksgiving a special time for families who need our help.

Little reminders:

1.    Please don't allow your children to bring toys (big or small) from home. They are sources of conflicts and tears. Our class is supplied with enough toys for everybody.

2.    Don't forget to label your children belonging (sippie cup, blanket, boxes of diapers and clothes).

3.    Check regularly if your child is provided with enough diapers, wipes and change of clothes. We usually put a note on the white board on the front door.
